Are you interested in becoming a dump truck operator in the mining industry? Dump truck operators work in the mines as part of the waste management team. They are responsible for moving waste from the mines to the appropriate place for disposal.
A trainee dump truck operator is a highly sought after, entry level role into the mining industry. For every job advertised companies can receive hundreds of applications for the position. In this article we will take a look at skills, qualifications and training required to be a trainee dump truck operator.
What are the requirements, skills & qualifications needed for a dump truck traineeship?
Certificate III – Surface Extraction Operations is completed over two years and will give you the skills you need to work as a production operator in an open cut mine or quarry.
There are different requirements between WA, NSW & QLD, so be sure to do your research for each state, but most companies will require:
Drivers Licence; There’s no consistency with licence requirements, some companies ask for a full unrestricted manual drivers licence, whilst others only require an automatic licence, and others only require a P2 licence.
Commitment to the term of the traineeship; Yes, it’s hard to get into the sector as a ‘greenie/trainee’, but what a lot of people don’t understand is how much it costs to get a greenie in. To start with; medicals, inductions, and what ever else they do before you even get onsite. Then you have flights, uniform, and PPE issuement, more inductions, and weeks of training…. Theeeennnnn after maybe a few swings, the trainee realises that it’s not their cup of tea, it’s boring, FIFO isn’t good for them, it’s too hard, the hours are too long etc etc.
Plus, on boarding a whole swag of trainee operators in a short time frame can be a hazard in itself. Imagine, a bunch of people driving huge trucks, that all have limited knowledge of the job and associated risks, that they don’t know about or how to handle.
Hold a high regard for safety; Mining is a dangerous business and requires stringent safety measures to protect workers, however, no matter how safe a mining operation may be, accidents can and do occur. It is essential that safety is always at the forefront of everyone’s mind. By following safety guidelines, you can help to ensure that you and your team are safe.
Other requirements:
- Have an ability to work in a team environment with a positive, can-do attitude
- Have a strong and honest work ethic
- National Police Clearance (valid within the last 6 months)
- Be able to work a rotating 7 day roster including nights and weekends
- A copy of your driving record
- Supply 2-3 work related referees
- Ability to pass a Coal Board Medical (NSW & QLD) NSW Order 43 medical
- Provide a residential address within 60kms of the mine site (Residential Roles)
- Be able to pass a pre-employment NSW Order 43 medical (NSW)

“It is vital to do thorough research before undertaking any training”
Is a dump truck licence the same as a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence?
No, a dump truck ticket is not a licence it’s unit of competency and is completely different to a Heavy Rigid licence. The unit of competency is RIIMPO311A conduct haul truck operations.
You don’t need any licence to drive a dump truck, just onsite training. Anything else is a waste of time and money.
Has anyone completed the Dump Truck Operators Course and got employment?
I can name at least 5 ‘training’ companies in QLD alone that offer little to no practical experience & have had hundred of complaints submitted to ASQA regarding the training people have received.
Back in the day, you could buy your machine tickets for the price of a couple of beers at the local pub.
Now days, companies are issuing statements of attainment to people after little to no practical training. It’s dangerous & the government authorities are well aware it’s happening but stopping it seems to be a major problem.
I do know that the authorities are cracking down on it harder & harder & certain ‘training’ companies have gone out of business due to the crack down
The biggest problem people face by unknowingly completing dodgy training with these companies is job prospects at the end. Any self respecting mining or civil company knows who the reputable training companies are and will steer well clear of the candidates who present quals from RTO’s with a bad reputation for dodgy training. - I did the training and it really is a waste of money and time.
- Don’t bother wasting money on haul pack tickets, you won’t get a job with no production experience.
- You only get max 1 hour in the truck over a week and 15min in a simulator. $3200 dollars, waste of money.
