$20 Billion Project to Create Over 6,000 Jobs

In a statement released by SunCable, the company announced a significant environmental approval from the Northern Territory Government and NT Environment Protection Authority for its AAPowerLink project. This approval marks a critical milestone for the $20 billion initiative, aimed at establishing the world’s largest renewable energy precinct.

Located in the Barkly region of the Northern Territory, AAPowerLink plans to deliver 4 GW of continuous green electricity to Darwin and 1.75 GW to Singapore via a 4,300 km subsea cable. The project is expected to generate more than 6,000 jobs during its construction phase, with a peak workforce of 14,300.

Managing Director Cameron Garnsworthy emphasized the project’s economic and environmental benefits, stating, “AAPowerLink will not only create thousands of jobs but also position the Northern Territory as a leader in renewable energy. It will play a crucial role in supplying clean electricity to Darwin and Singapore, fostering economic growth in sectors like green minerals and hydrogen production.”

The project includes a solar generation and storage facility at Powell Creek, an 800 km HVDC transmission line, a Darwin converter site, and a subsea HVDC cable to Indonesia. SunCable aims to finalise Indigenous Land Use Agreements, explore wind power integration, and optimise infrastructure to maximise energy efficiency.

AAPowerLink’s environmental approval sets the stage for further development towards a Final Investment Decision by 2027, with construction expected to commence soon after, promising substantial economic benefits and job opportunities for the Northern Territory.
